Repairing Chimney Leaks in Louisville
Chimneys are very likely places to look for roof leaks, generally they’re not found around the base of the chimney where it goes through the roof, but are mostly found up on the chimney itself at the cap or in the mortar joints.
When it’s the chimney cap leaking it’s not that detailed of a repair, and we do a lot of them.
When it is old weathered mortar joints allowing the intrusion of water, the chimney can usually be repaired utilizing a process known as tuck pointing. Basically the old mortar is chiseled out and replaced with new mortar installed with a grout bag or trialed into the joints off of a mortar hawk. At this time it’s best to go ahead and re-flash the chimney with new all new flashing where it mates to the roof.

Then there are times when the only solution is to rebuild the chimney, and this is where a truly skilled craftsmen comes in. The roof is protected by coverings while the old chimney is busted down then hauled away. Afterwards a new chimney is built from scratch.
